Resolving the issue of those using MSN Messenger (Error Code: 80072745)
Please note that this information was taken from a well known source and was not created by me.
A lot of people are experiencing problems with MSN Messenger, especially the latest version. MSN Messenger 8, also known as Messenger Live!
I expeirienced this problem myself, relating to Error Code: 80072745. It was a pain in the ass, it became rather annoying that I could not sign in.
I kept getting the following message "We were unable to sign you in to the MSN Messenger, possibly because of a problem with your Internet connection. Please try again later. 80072745"
I began to try signing in to an online messenger service, such as http://webmessenger.msn.com, I was able to sign in fine, so blaming the server was out of the question.
If you are experiencing this problem, I sugest you try the following steps.
(Before you do the following steps, be sure that your Anti-Virus is fully updated, and you have run a full system scan for viruses/trojans.)
1: If you are using a Firewall, be sure that MSN Messenger has been granted access.
2: Clear your Internet Explorer’s Cache and Cookies. — Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools>Options. Delete Files and Delete Cookies. (If you are using something different, Mozilla Firefox, they can be found in the Privacy TAB).
3: MSN Messenger is required for “Use SSL 2.0” and “Use SSL 3.0” are enabled. — Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools>Options. Go to Advanced, scroll down and check them both.
4: Final step, Go to Start>Run and type in cmd and press enter. Then enter the commands below one by one, and then press enter for each command:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
( A message will appear, click ok. Then type in the next command, and repeat)
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
After doing this, restart your Modem/Router, then try to sign in. If you are still unable to sign in, restart your computer.
Sometimes spyware/addware can be the problem, I recommend that you use Spybot – Search and Destroy. Click here for the Spybot website.
If you need any more information, feel free to contact me. martin@martinjknight.com

Here is another way of possibly resolving the problem, which was posted by internet-kaltersia. You may want to try this out if the previous information didn’t work.
Here is the crazy thing I had to do to fix this…
Quote from Raphael
Dear all if you have not heard simply add these addresses to the following file that should be opened with notepad and MSN will work.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts – (When you open the ETC folder open the HOSTS file using notepad).
insert the following addresses:
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.skadns.net(INSERT THEM DIRECTLY UNDER THE OTHER 2 ADDRESSES AND ALIGN THEM WITH TAB.)
Easy done … good luck.
Thank you for that additional information!
wow! thanks a lot mate. I followed those steps and voila, it all works fine! cheers

If you are on T Mobile web and walk you may well not be able to solve this issue unless you un install the prog and re install from your set up disc, Error Code: 80072745 is a T Mobile error code. From what ive been told and what im reading, T Mobile are cutting back on MSN services such as messenger, from what ive been told it was something they installed in an up date, cant swear on it but once i re installed T Mobile Web & Walk eveything was working ok again, this time i disabled up dates.

Interesting…
Well this problem never occured from T-Mobile’s application since I didn’t have it installed on my system. I haven’t even heard of it until now.
I guess that Error Code may have multiple issues.

Thank you. Fixed up nicely. I wonder if simply switching the router on and off in order to aquire a new IP address might have done the same thing? Guess I won’t know until this happens again. Thank you!

For those of you that have had problems with this solution, I am sorry as I missed out a small part. I edited this post, and it should work fine now.
*EDIT* “4: Final step, Go to Start>Run and type in cmd and press enter.”
martinjknight said this on July 22, 2007 at 8:48 pm |
As in after entering the command for the 4th step, instead of being successful it has code error. what do i do when such errors appear?
Jacintha said this on July 23, 2007 at 4:25 pm |
What command is it that you type in to recieve this “error”?
Please note that after you have entered the first command, a pop up box is displayed and you just click on okay, and type the next command. Could you be mistaken with this?
When the box comes up, continue to the next command. And so on and so on.

For me the “MSN problem” was actually down to T-Mobile adding restrictions to my Web-n-Walk Pro account. Supposedly 2Gb Internet useage they added blocks to instant messenger when they had the technology to do so without advertising the fact. It took a lot of emails back and forth the CS but in the end their only “solution” was to get a new contract with them for £30 a month rather than the £20 I pay on Web-n-Walk Pro. I decided to take my business to 3 who do 3gb with no hidden restrictions for £15 a month. By restricting MSN actually T-Mobile just lost a business customer.

For those of you that are using a Mobile phone to log in to MSN, I suggest contacting your provider. As this solution is strictly for PC’s only.

When I tried it, I could not do the regsvr32 initpki.dll
’cause I got a message that the module could not be accessed.
Then it took me three hours to find out that there is NO such file in Vista, so I could just ignore that!
I did the others, though, and resarted and Voila – Messenger was *back*.

For those people who use eset nod32 3.0 antivir sytem, i recommend the following steps:
1, open the nod main window and go to the options menu
2, choose other options (f5)
3, on the left side you can see the browser menu and than search the msnmsgr.exe
4, untick the box

I have found the problem, The solution for me was to disable the option of Internet Traffic on ESET NOD 32 Antivirus. It is in Configuration – Internet Traffic configuration- when you are in the tree go to option Antivirus & Antispyware -> Internet traffic protection -> HTTP -> Internet Navigators, and un-check the option of msnmsgr.exe , I think that the problem was that NOD32 was blocking the traffic. After this it works fine for me.

If there is a new version before downloading it with the net switched OFF run ever scan you can of your computer/laptop then down laod new version of the firm ware (mine is a netgear router) Follow instructions and your shouldhave normal service once more

In the 4th step it gives me an error when I type in regsvr32 wintrust.dll. “The module ‘wintrust.dll’ was located but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005.” WTH? I’m running on Windows 7.. And with the other suggestion it won’t let me save after adding the two addresses, says I don’t have the correct permissions to save to the file.
